Four Gum Disease Myths

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gum tissue brought on by a buildup of tartar. A lot of misconception surrounds gum disease, preventing dental patients from seeking proper treatment. Here are the four most common myths of gum disease, and the truth behind them:

1. Gum disease is rare. Gum disease is actually a widespread issue among adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least half of people over the age of 30 have gum disease. Because symptoms of gum disease are usually painless, many people aren’t even aware that anything is wrong.

2. Only people with cavities can develop gum disease. While cavities and gum disease both stem from a buildup of plaque, they aren’t interlinked. You could be suffering from gum disease, even if your mouth isn’t showing signs of tooth decay. Red, swollen, or bleeding gums are a common symptom of gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease.

3. Bad breath is a sign of gum disease. While bad breath (or halitosis) is a symptom of gum disease, it can also signify other oral issues, such as poor dental hygiene and dry mouth. If you suffer from persistent bad breath, come see Dr. Alex Abernathy for a diagnosis.

4. Gum disease guarantees tooth loss. If you take good care of your teeth by brushing and flossing daily, eating healthy, and visiting the dentist regularly, you shouldn’t lose your teeth to gum disease. Even after being diagnosed with gum disease, you can treat the condition and halt its progress with the help of your dentist.

If you suspect you have gum disease, please contact Lakeland Dental Care at 601-981-8166 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Alex Abernathy. Gum disease is easily reversible if treated early.
