Dental Restoration: Why Not Go for the Gold!?

Have you considered using gold for your next tooth restoration? Nowadays, you have several choices in materials, but some dentists may not always ask you if you have a choice. With the advent of 3D printing technology, porcelain has been the assumed material used. While porcelain is aesthetically pleasing—looking the most natural, there are still many areas where gold is superior.

-Expense: You may believe that gold is going to be the most pricy. Well, that isn’t necessarily true. Of course, it depends on the size of the tooth and the amount of gold used, but you may be surprised to discover that there is little to no difference in price between a porcelain and a gold tooth.

-Strength: Gold is a highly adaptable metal that resists breakage, wear, and corrosion. Also, because of its toughness, it has the longest life of all dental restoration materials.

-Best Fit: Gold is malleable and expands and contracts along with your teeth when exposed to hot and cold. So, it does an excellent job of sealing and preventing leakage or recurrent tooth decay. This also means it is gentle to neighboring teeth.

-Loss of Natural Tooth: When prepping for a crown, we will need to grind down your natural tooth to make room for the cap. Porcelain requires that more of the natural tooth be removed, while a gold crown allows for you to keep more of your original tooth.

-Body Friendly: Gold is hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and biocompatible. You can’t develop an allergy or be resistant to gold like you can to other materials. Gold has been an extremely compatible substance when used for medical purposes alongside human tissue.
