Dental bridges are often used to replace a tooth that has been lost to an untreated cavity or dental fracture. They are created from durable dental materials that rival the structural integrity of natural tooth enamel.

However, there are still some things that can chip or potentially fracture a dental bridge. This is more likely to occur if you fail to wear a protective mouth guard during sports or you grind your teeth when sleeping.

If your dental bridge is chipped, fractured, or damaged in any way you need to have it examined by an experienced dentist like Dr. Alex Abernathy. Any delay can increase your chances of suffering additional complications.

While you are waiting to see Dr. Abernathy there are a few things you can do to help minimize potential complications.

You can clear any debris from your mouth with a gentle saltwater rinse. Otherwise, you should leave any other cleaning measures to Dr. Abernathy and his professional tools and techniques. Dr. Abernathy will assess the damage to the dental bridge and the internal abutments. If both abutments anchoring the bridge are still intact, he might be able to replace the damaged bridge and cement a new one in its place.

If one of the abutments have been damaged he might need to perform a root canal. This will restore sufficient structure to eventually anchor a new dental bridge in place.

If you are in the Jackson, Mississippi, area and you have a chipped or fractured bridge, you should not delay in calling 601-981-8166 to have it professionally treated at Lakeland Dental Care.
